The Year of the Book

Cheng, A., (2012).  The Year of the Book.  New York: Houghton Mifflin.

Realistic Fiction

I would use this book when I was teaching about friendships.  This might be a great book to start off the year with in a third-fifth grade classroom!

Simon, Seymour.  (2003).  The moon.  New York: Simon & Schuster.
Nonfiction book
This book presents some amazing facts about the moon, including why there is no weather, no sound, and why astronauts bounce on the moon.

I would definitely use this book when we study solar systems and planets, in conjunction with our science curriculum.  I would like to teach the Cornell note-taking activity where they take notes while they are reading and then analyze the notes to form questions the notes would answer.  This would be a great way to support readers' comprehension in nonfiction texts and make connections between reading strategies and science knowledge.
